Monopolie is a freeware version of the classic Monopoly board game by Parker Brothers.

Monopolie is an open-source version of the classic Monopoly game. Users can download it as a precompiled binary with an installer. Alternately, users can download the Visual Basic source code, make changes if they desire, compile it themselves and then run the game directly from that executable. Note that Monopolie was developed for Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP. The developer does not even promise support for Windows NT, and, therefore the program is likely to experience problems in modern operating systems like Windows 7 and Windows 8. Emulation modes are a possible solution but remain unsupported.

As far as Monopoly clones go, Monopolie is quite good. The board, property cards and Community Chest and Chance cards are all present and accurate. A significant limitation, however, is that the board does not yet, and may never, support text directly on the playing surface. Many Monopoly fans may know the property locations by heart, but for those who do not, it is necessary to click on the property to reveal the property card, which displays the property name. This can slow down the pace of what is already an inherently slow-paced game.

Beyond that limitation, the Monopoly experience is fun and comprehensive. All of the original playing pieces are there, and the game supports a full complement of players. The official rules are faithfully enforced, and the game even allows for Free Parking, which is the most common Monopoly house rule. The game does not, however, support any kind of customization, including other house rules. The program does allow for the saving and loading of game state, which means that the player can suspend a current game and resume it at a later time. Unfortunately, there is no support for online or email-based play.
